Things Behind the Sun.

Before I started field I was at a stump with producing art and I wasn’t entirely sure what I was producing, it wasn’t fun and I definitely was not enjoying it. I needed a break from my practice and needed to do something creative and just making work for fun and not because I had to. When participating in Things Behind the Sun, David was able to help us understand that sometimes it is good just to go back to basics and create simplistic drawings from the environment around us, this begun the drawings based on how I felt in a wet, damp and cold forest down in Neath. Afterwards, the trip to the Gower was a true eye opener as all social media, connecting to others that were not on the trip was completely cut off due to the lack of signal, this enabled myself to explore and be playful towards my work and also how I responded. From this, I was able to explore materials through processes such as chine-collé and plaster moulding which involved me transforming my two-dimensional drawings into sculptural pieces. Taking the playfulness and being open-minded to my surroundings and materials are aspects I will take forward into my practice and it has definitely influenced the thought processing throughout the remainder of this year.


Teaching in Art & Design.

From finishes such an exciting and positive field project I was dreading the second which was Teaching in Art and Design, this is because I knew it would be formal, it had to be structured I needed to make sure I was on top of everything. The very start proved my theory correct and I began to worry. Being placed into Whitchurch High School was a challenge and this is due to how driven the Art department and the Head of Department is. Sharing the experience with another student this being in both the teaching and planning aspects was problematic as I wanted to be able to experience it on my own in ways as this is a career I want to pursue and I felt like the other was not taking it as serious. Due to this I begun to plan the lessons on my own and actioning them as well, this was due to the lack of attendance from the other. I was able to teach a wide range of students starting from key stage three all the way to A Level. The one bit of advice that the teachers were giving students that begun to worry me was that the students did not need to do a Foundation year before their degree, this I disagree with as I believe foundation is the year for you to progress and really develop before you commit fully to your chosen degree and practice. I truly expressed this concern to the teachers, pupils and also my own lecturers back here at CSAD. Despite the concerns and problems, I found I really did enjoy my time at the school and I have since begun to plan my options which involve teaching.

Personal Statement 2_3

Throughout this year my practice has been driven by the magnetism towards celebrity culture and how my own idolisation has affected the physical and mentality of my own mind. By researching imagery based on personal interests such as Lady Gaga, colleges have been produced using saturated colours, text and images which are processed digitally and projected onto me and which I become the canvas. By painting onto myself I am able to demonstrate the interaction of the physical and digital and show how the two can act together to create strong images and challenge the ideas of a contemporary painting.

Outcome materials and Arrangement.

The materials and equipment that will be used will be as follows:

  • 3-metre fabric, thin enough to allow light to fall through
  • Projector
  • Hooks to hold the fabric up as it will be hung from the ceiling
  • Fishing wire to attach the fabric to the hooks
  • A shelf to be able to place the projector on to.

As I requested for a dark space I have been kindly given one, which is shown in the diagram below. However, I am sharing the space with another student whose work I am unfamiliar with. Due to this, I need to speak and organise how much space will be dedicated to each other. I need enough room for the fabric to fall and for the throw of the projection.

Displaying

These are the final five images. Next, I need to choose the strongest one to be displayed for the exhibition/assessment.

The image will be displayed on a 3-metre piece of fabric that will be displayed within a dark space. This is to ensure that the projection will be strong enough. The fabric will be hung from the ceiling and will drop creating a curve which will allow the projection to warp and curve.

Using rear projection, I will be able to hide the machine and give the illusion that this is a digital painting.

The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist, Michael Rakowitz

Being displayed as 2018’s fourth plinth Rakowitz displays a replica of Lamassu a lost artefact which was taken from Mosul Museum and destroyed, with many others, by the Islamic State.

The sculpture takes the form of a winged bull which was seen as a protective God-like figure and was originally outside the entrance of Nergal Gate of Nineveh from 700BC. Placing the sculpture in Trafalgar in some ways seems like a form of protection with all of the attacks that have taken place in recent years within the city of London especially Westminster.

Being made of empty Iraqi date syrup cans, the Fourth Plinth Commission describes it as a “representative of a once-renowned industry decimated by the Iraq wars.”

The sign states that the Lamassu “can symbolically continue as guardian of a city’s past, present and future” which can create a direct connection with London and offer protection.

Pipilotti Rist

By displaying work using fusions of light, object and space Pipilotti Rist explores themes of feminism, the body and performance art by using analogue film and projection especially in her early works like “I’m Not The Girl Who Misses Much.” From watching the video I really don’t understand the reasoning behind it as I begin to get distracted by the heightened noises like the talking and also the movement of the figure.

 

The piece “Mother Floor” feels a lot stronger with the themes that Rist deals within “I’m not the girl who misses much” as the image is a lot clearer and it focuses more on the body as a performance by using different camera angels and strong colours.
